Yet another sports film about underdogs

There has been an overdose of sports films about an underdog or a group of underdogs achieving glory in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. Chak De! India (2007), Mary Kom (2014), Yellow (2014), Dangal (2016), Gold (2018) and the recently released Me Pan Sachin are a few examples.

Director Mangesh Kanthale’s Sur Sapata appears like just another film in the genre, going by the recently released trailer of the film.

The story takes place in a small village in Maharashtra where a group of kids (Hansraj Jagtap, Chinmay Sant, Yesh Kulkarni and others) have made life hell for the teachers and other authorities in school because of their mischief. But they excel in the sport of Kabaddi. They take part in a competition in which their school hasn’t won since they last brought home the trophy 25 years ago.

Upendra Limaye plays the role of the coach. He played a swimming coach in Yellow, but the character was quite different from what he is playing here. The film also stars Pravin Tarde, Govind Namdeo, Anand Ingle and well-known filmmaker Sanjay Jadhav.

The trailer is presented with a lot of style, but it doesn’t excite you simply because of the repetitive subject. The Kabaddi scenes seem to have been shot impressively. The team of kids are perfect to play underdogs.

Sur Sapata will be released on 21 March.
