Weekend Box Office: Us Scares Up $70 Millon Debut

In the immortal words of Hollywood’s newly-crowned Thickest Dad Winston Duke, “You wanna’ get crazy, we can get crazy.” Because crazy is exactly how to describe the opening of Us, which sheared $70 million in its first weekend. Jordan Peele‘s sophomore feature more than doubled the $33 million debut of Get Out, and now stands as the third highest horror opening ever behind Andy Muschietti‘s IT ($123 million) and David Gordon Green‘s Halloween ($76 million).

As far as films that aren’t adapted from existing IP or a sequel, Us officially has the second highest opening ever. The only film to beat it in that arena? James Cameron‘s Avatar, quite literally the highest-grossing film of all time.

It was a weekend of milestones, really. Captain Marvel, which came in second with a still-impressive $35 million, crossed the $900 million mark worldwide to become the tenth highest-earning comic book movie of all time. Domestically, the Brie Larson-fronted film now sits at $321 million, sliding above Iron Man‘s $318 million domestic gross.

The most surprising victory story of the weekend goes to Five Feet Apart, coming in fourth place—behind the apparently director-less Wonder Park—with $8.7 million. But the film, a romantic drama starring Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson, only dipped 33% from its opening weekend.

Rounding out the top 5 is the old mainstay How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in its fifth weekend. The animated trilogy-capper chomped another $6.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $145 million on a $129 million budget.

Check out the weekend’s top 10 estimates below, and be back here next week to see if Tim Burton‘s Dumbo can fly at the box office.

Us can scare up any business at the box office.
