Varun Dhawan-Shraddha Kapoor’s dance film is now called Street Dancer

Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series and director Remo D’Souza have decided to let go of the ABCD title and use a fresh one for their next dance film. The film starring Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor is now called Street Dancer.

ABCD (2013) and ABCD 2 (2015) were produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures, respectively, and therefore the new producers (Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Lizelle D’Souza) had to let go of the title that had tremendous recall value for Hindi film audiences.

But the makers did throw in the number 3 in the background of their motion poster, released yesterday, perhaps as a reminder to fans of the ABCD franchise that this is still the third dance offering from the team of the first two hit films.

“Why walk on the streets when you can dance on them! Be a rule breaker and come fall in step with #StreetDancer this 8th November,” wrote Dhawan on his Twitter account while announcing the new title.

The new title also feels like a shout-out to Govinda’s popular song ‘I Am A Street Dancer’ (composed by Bappi Lahiri) from the 1986 film Ilzaam, still etched in film lovers’ memories.

The name also reminds us of the hit British dance comedy drama Street Dance 3D which came out in 2010 followed by a sequel a few years later.

Street Dancer, also starring Prabhu Deva and Nora Fatehi, is due to be released on 8 November in 3D.
