Total Dhamaal review: This insane comedy is for six-year-olds
Trade analyst Atul Mohan says, “Who said mindless entertainers no longer work? Critics can have their views, but that never influences the box office. Look, it’s simple. If a film brings a smile on your face, then it’s working. Everyone now and you need a light-hearted film like Total Dhamaal.”
Another trade analyst Girish Wankhede said, “Total Dhamaal proves that we have room for all kind of films. You and I can say it’s mindless, but the people have loved it because it is a family film, it has great star cast and good music.”
Meanwhile, the preceding week’s release Gully Boy has been hit hard by Total Dhamaal. The Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt-starrer had a good first extended week with Rs99 crore nett. However, business has slowed in the second week. Gully Boy’s collection dropped to Rs2.75 crore nett on its second Monday. It made Rs8.50 crore nett on its first Monday. In four days of its second week so far, Gully Boy has made Rs19.50 crore nett to take its domestic business to Rs118.50 crore nett so far.
Gully Boy review: Ranveer Singh explodes with a new sound in Zoya Akhtar’s tale of hope
Mohan says, “Perhaps it is expected. A film like Gully Boy appeals to the urban audience. It made its core business in the first week in the urban area and you expected a drop in the second week.”
Wankhede, too, didn’t think that Total Dhamaal has eaten into Gully Boy’s share. “No, I don’t think so. Before Total Dhamaal was released, Gully Boy had made Rs103 crore nett. Gully Boy has its own audience. It has a repeat value and I think it is going to go steady in the second week.”
Made at an estimated budget of Rs75 crore, Gully Boy was released on more than 4,000 screens in India. Produced by Excel Entertainment, Gully Boy has an Rs60 crore combined satellite, digital, and music deal with Zee. The film is based on the lives of real-life rappers DIVINE and Naezy.
