Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero crawls at the box office

Shah Rukh Khan’s mission to mars love story Zero hasn’t quite taken off at the box office. The film is currently running in its second week and collected Rs89.25 crore nett in India, as reported by Boxofficeindia.com.

Directed by Aanand L Rai, and featuring Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, Zero had a made a decent Rs84.10 crore nett in the first week, but the largely negative reviews and the poor word of mouth has seen its fortunes nosedive.

The film is currently in its second week and in five days it has only managed Rs5.15 crore nett. Zero collected Rs85 lakh nett on its second Friday, before improving marginally to Rs1 and Rs1.25 crore nett on the weekend. Zero is said to be made at an estimated budget of Rs200 crore. The film was released across 4,400  screens in India.

Ranveer Singh-starrer Simmba, that was released on 28 December 2018, took the box office by storm, bagging Rs124.68 crore nett in its five-day run so far.

Some relief for Zero was that it managed to match its second Friday figure on 31 December, which was not a holiday.

As per sources, Zero is said to have earned Rs90 crore through satellite and digital rights to Netflix. Produced by Red Chillies and Colour Yellow Productions, Zero is based on the life of dwarf Bauua Singh (Khan) who offers to travel to space in the hope to win back his love Aafiya (Sharma).

Khan has struggled in the last few years with high costs of his film which haven’t translated to higher box office returns. Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) failed miserably, just managing Rs62 crore nett in its India business. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, was released across 3,200 screens, and its estimated budget was around Rs120 crore.

Meanwhile, Kannada film KGF [Kolva Gold Mines], which was released alongside Zero, continued its fine run in the Hindi belt too. The Hindi version was released across 1,500 screens and has collected Rs29.50 crore nett so far.

Distributed by Excel Entertainment, the period action film starring Yash, made a good Rs2 crore on its second Tuesday. It made Rs21.25 crore nett in its first week, and in the five days of its second week, KGF has surpassed the much fancied Zero, making Rs8.25 crore nett as opposed to Rs5.15 crore nett collected by the latter.

With Ranveer Singh-starrer Simmba going great guns, both Zero and KGF will find the going tough.
