Sanjay Dutt cuts a forlorn figure as he plays Balraj in Kalank

The latest of the character revelations from Abhishek Varman’s Kalank is that of Sanjay Dutt. The actor features on the third poster from Kalank, after Varun Dhawan and Aditya Roy Kapur’s characters. Named Balraj, Dutt cuts a forlorn figure as his features loom over an entire city.

Set in the Partition era, Kalank revolves around the division of India and Pakistan which resulted in migration, violence and is often referred to as one of the bloodiest moments after Independence. The fiery red theme of the posters seem to capture this turbulence of the time.

Dutt’s Balraj is a greyed, bespectacled father-figure who seems to be the head of a family involved in this migration. While there is not much detail available about the character, the name itself carries reminders of the late Balraj Sahni, who was part of the iconic Garm Hava (1974), another momentous Partition drama.

Kalank is produced by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, and Apoorva Mehta. The film is co-produced by Fox Star Studios.

Set in the 1940s era, Kalank is scheduled to be released in theatres on 19 April.
