Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory, and the architect behind Sony’s Hotel Transylvania franchise, will be bringing a new, original animated series to Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim this fall. The series’ pick-up for Primal extends the WarnerMedia channel’s relationship with Tartakovsky, which is already 20+ years strong.
As THR reports, Primal centers on “a caveman at the dawn of evolution and a dinosaur on the brink of extinction” who form an unlikely bond that will be their only hope to survive a deadly and violent prehistoric, primordial world. Envisioned as a half-hour series, Primal is expected to arrive on Adult Swim later this year in the fall. You can get your first look at the new series in the first trailer, below:
From the Emmy-winning creator of #SamuraiJack – Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal comes to #AdultSwim this Fall
While Samurai Jack centered on the honorable warrior who found himself unstuck in time and flung into the future, this new series takes a page from the past. Like, the way, way past, back to a (fictional) time when early cavemen existed alongside the last of the dinosaurs. It’ll be interesting to see how Tartakovsky’s aesthetic changes in this new setting without the many and varied tech and tools of the far-flung future. Will there be some sort of twist coming that introduces more variety to the world, or will Tartakovsky explore prehistoric tech by visiting different cultures in the land? Time will tell!
Adult Swim also has some other new projects in the works, like the Harvey Birdman spinoff Birdgirl, starring Paget Brewster, a Blade Runner anime series nested between the two feature films’ timelines, and Three Busy Debras, a live-action comedy with Amy Poehler set as an executive producer. These newcomers join returning titles like Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken, Tigtone, Hot Streets, Joe Pera Talks With You and more.
