NTR Mahanayakudu, the second part of the NTR biopic, which was released on 22 February in cinemas, has emerged as one of the biggest disasters of all time in the Telugu industry.
According to reliable trade sources, the film collected a worldwide distributor share of just Rs3.40 crore, making it the lowest opening weekend numbers for a Balakrishna-starrer.
NTR Mahanayakudu follows the journey of the leader in politics. It chronicles his rise from a novice to a fearless leader who dedicated his life for the betterment of the Telugu people.
The trade is shocked that NTR Mahanayakudu couldn’t even register a decent start at the box office like the first part. The film crashed on the second day, according to a source in the trade. Both the films have been made at a budget of approximately Rs50 crore. NTR Mahanayakudu was released on 2,000 screens worldwide.
While the first part also turned out to be a disaster, it at least managed to register a decent start. Kathanayakudu is said to have suffered losses worth over 50% of investment for the distributors. In the case of the second part, the losses are said to be even more.
Directed by Krish Jagarlamudi aka Krish, Mahanayakudu also featured Vidya Balan as Basavatarakam, NTR’s wife. The film also focused a lot on NTR’s relationship with his wife and how she was the biggest support system in his life.
The second part also shone the spotlight on NTR’s relationship with his son-in-law, N Chandrababu Naidu.
The film featured a galaxy of stars. While Rana Daggubati played the role of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Naidu, Sumanth Akkineni essayed the role of his late grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao.
