Nathan Fillion was born on the 27th of March, 1971 in Edmonton, Canada. He grew up in a relatively small family and was the youngest of two children. Nathan is of Irish and French Canadian descent. His parents, Rob and Cookie Fillion, were both school teachers.

The actor spent his early life in Edmonton and attained his basic education from Holy Trinity Catholic High School. He also went to Concordia University College of Alberta and the University of Alberta. In his early youth, the actor had thought about teaching, wanting to follow in his parents’ footsteps; but he admitted that he first noticed he had a flair for acting in the 5th Grade when he pretended to be sick so he would not go to school.

However, his desire to act was not awakened until he was a senior student at the University of Alberta when he heard about the auditions for a role in One Life to Live. He auditioned alongside hundreds of others and was eventually chosen for a secondary role in the melodramatic TV show. That was his first role, and it marked the beginning of his great career.

Career

Nathan Fillion has had a busy and a rather rapid career spanning from 1993 till date. Motivated by his love for acting, he dropped out of university one semester to graduation and moved to the Big Apple where he got into the world of cinema. Before 1994, he already landed roles in various theatre, television, and film projects including the soap opera Die-Nasty.

He had his big break in the 1994 soap opera One Life to Live where he starred as Joey Buchanan. His role earned him a prestigious nomination for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series. Eventually, he left the series in 1997 and moved to Los Angeles where he attended auditions for various projects and eventually landed notable roles in the military drama – Saving Private Ryan; the sitcom – Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place; and as Caleb in the final episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The actor then ventured into science fiction in 2002 when he starred in a science fiction television series, Firefly. He won the Syfy Genre Awards for Best Actor/Television for his role as Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Natha Fillion has also voiced various animated series and video games such as King of the Hill, Jade Empire, and Justice League Unlimited.

He starred in a 2006 horror movie Slither and bagged a Fangoria Chainsaw Award nomination in the ‘Dude You Don’t Wanna Mess’ With category. In the same year, he signed a talent holding contract with Fox Broadcasting Company and was cast as Alex Tully in the show, Drive. The show was canceled in April 2007 as it did not deliver the ratings Fox had expected.

From March 2009 to May 2014, Nathan Fillion starred as Richard Castle in the series Castle. For his legendary performance, he was nominated for several awards and went on to win many of the awards. The versatile actor has appeared in various podcasts, lent his voice to numerous animations and video games and he even hosted the 2013 WGA West Coast Awards. In 2012, while he was still filming Castle, he landed the role of Dogberry in Joss Whedon’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing and in 2013, he appeared as Hermes in the fantasy/adventure movie Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

In February 2018, he got his part as John Nolan in The Rookie and in July of the same year, he released a short film titled Uncharted which went viral because of its witty humor. Nathan Fillion’s loyal fans even took to social media to campaign for it to be turned into a Netflix series.
