Biography/Wiki

N.D. Tiwari (Narayan Dutt Tiwari) was a former Indian politician. He was born on 18 October 1925 in Baluti, United Provinces, British India (now in Nainital District, Uttarakhand). Initially, he was a part of the Praja Socialist Party, but later, he became a part of the Indian National Congress. Tiwari is the only Indian politician to have served as the Chief Minister (CM) of two Indian states, namely Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. He was also a part of the Indian struggle for independence and spent 15 months in jail as well. Ever since he got into college, he took a keen interest in student politics and was also elected the President of the Allahabad University Student Union.

Family, Wife & Children

N.D. Tiwari was born into a Brahmin family of landlords in village Baluti, Nainital district. His father, Poornanand Tiwari, was an officer in the forest department under the British government.

In 1954, he married Sushila Tiwari and they remained married till her death in 1993. On 14 May 2014, at the age of 89, he married Ujjwala Tiwari in a ceremony that took place in Lucknow. Ujjwala Tiwari is a retired lecturer. N.D. Tiwari was in a relationship with Ujjwala since 1960. At that time, her marriage was going through a rough patch; whereas, Tiwari was already married to his wife Late Sushila Tiwari.

He also has a son, Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, with Ujjwala Tiwari. Rohit was born as an illegitimate child of an affair between N. D. Tiwari and Ujjwala Tiwari.

Career

Narayan Dutt Tiwari attended various schools namely, M. B. School, Haldwani, E. M. High School, Bareilly, and C.R.S.T. High School, Nainital. He did his M.A. (Political Science) and L.L.B from Allahabad University.

His father left his government job and joined the Non-Cooperation movement. N.D. Tiwari and his father were both a part of the Indian Independence Movement. On 14 December 1942, N.D. Tiwari was arrested for writing against the British policies and was sent to the Nainital Jail, where his father was already lodged. After spending 15 months in jail, he was released in 1944.

Since his youth, N.D. Tiwari took a keen interest in politics. Tiwari joined the Allahabad University, where he became a part of the Student Union. Later on, he was elected the President of the Allahabad University Student Union. From 1945 to 1949, Tiwari served as the Secretary of All India Student Congress.

In 1990, he was the frontrunner for the post of Prime Minister of India. However, he was replaced by P. V. Narasimha Rao; as he lost the Lok Sabha elections by 800 votes. Although he was a part of the Indian National Congress, in 2017, however, he supported the BJP only for the sake of development.

Political Journey

In 1952, N.D. Tiwari was elected the MLA from the Nainital constituency on the Praja Samajwadi Party ticket. He was again elected as the MLA from the Nainital constituency and became the leader of Opposition in the Assembly in the year 1957.

However, in 1963, Tiwari became a member of the Indian National Congress Party. He was, then, elected as the MLA from the Kashipur constituency and was appointed as a minister in the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1965. From 1969 to 1971, he remained the first President of the Indian Youth Congress.

The year 1976 proved to be quite fruitful for him as he became the Chief Minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh in January. From 1979 till 1980, he remained the Minister for Finance and Parliamentary Affairs during the government run by Chaudhary Charan Singh. Then, in August 1984, he served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the second time.

In June 1988, Tiwari began his third term as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. However, in 1994, he resigned from the Indian National Congress.

He went on to form his own All India Indira Congress (Tiwari) Party along with senior Congress leader, Arjun Singh in the year 1995. In the year 1996, N.D. Tiwari was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha. In 1997, he joined the Indian National Congress back again and in 1999, he was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha.

In 2002, N.D. Tiwari became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and in August 2007, he was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. However, he resigned from this post on 26 December 2009, citing ‘health grounds.’

Controversies

  • In December 2009, he had to resign from the post of Governor of Andhra Pradesh over his alleged involvement in a sex scandal. It all began with the broadcast by a Telugu language satellite news channel “ABN Andhra Jyothi.” The news channel streamed a video of N.D. Tiwari in bed with 3 women at his official residence in the Raj Bhavan of Andhra Pradesh.

  • In 2008, a paternity suit was filed by Rohit Shekhar Tiwari claiming N. D. Tiwari to be his biological father. A DNA Test was performed; which later proved Tiwari to be Rohit’s biological father and Ujjwala Tiwari as Rohit’s biological mother. On 3 March 2014, N. D. Tiwari accepted that Rohit Shekhar was his son. He said “I have accepted that Rohit Shekhar is my son. The DNA test also proved he is my biological son.”

Death

Narayan Dutt Tiwari died on 18 October 2018 following a chronic illness at Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi. He was 93 years old. He had also suffered a brain stroke on 20 September 2017.
