Mumbai mills’ strike forms background for director Atul Taishete’s Vartak Nagar

Hindi film Vartak Nagar opened the three-day Jharkhand International Film Festival (JIFF) in Ranchi on Friday, 1 February 2019. The film explores the friendship of four friends in 1980s as they navigate through a difficult period in Mumbai — the mill strikes.

Directed by Atul Taishete, Vartak Nagar features actors Jimmy Shergill and Raghu Ram. Besides JIFF, the feature film has already been screened at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California last year and the Kolkata International Film Festival last November.

Produced by Amit Agarwal, under his banner Adarsh Telemedia, Vartak Nagar is also in the process of being selected for the Imagineindia International Film Festival in Madrid, Spain.

Agarwal has previously produced the Bengali film Astra (2012), and the Hindi films M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) and Simran (2017).

Taishete, a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), makes his directorial debut with Vartak Nagar. He wrote the additional dialogues for Sriram Raghavan’s Johnny Gaddaar (2007) and he directed the short film Rewind (2007) which was screened theatrically in India and was available for purchase internationally at the Apple iTunes store.
