Manav Kaul, Nandita Das lead official remake of Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai

Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s cult 1980 film, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, has been remade with Manav Kaul in the lead role. Naseeruddin Shah had played Albert Pinto in the original.

Directed by Soumitra Ranade, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai?, which also stars Nandita Das and Saurabh Shukla, is set to be released on 12 April.

The film is the latest in a line of remakes that includes Ittefaq (1969) and Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978).

Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai (1980) was written and directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza and also featured Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil in key roles. The film went on to win the Filmfare Critics award for Best Film that year.

The film is the story of an angry mechanic, Albert Pinto, who harbours the ideal that hard work trumps all. Only when his father’s mill shuts down and he is threatened for protesting does Albert realize the truth and power of capitalism and the millowners.

The film formed the second part of Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s existentialist trilogy of Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastan (1978) and Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989).

Ranade, who has helmed the remake, had directed Jajantaram Mamantaram (2004), an Indianized mix of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and the story of the demon Bakasura from the Mahabharata.

Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai? is set to be released in theatres on 12 April.
