It’s official! Varun to star in remake of father David Dhawan’s Coolie No.1

Actor Varun Dhawan has confirmed that he will be starring in the remake of the Govinda-starrer Coolie No.1 (1995), which was directed by his father David Dhawan. The remake will also be helmed by David.

There was speculation and unconfirmed reports about Varun doing the film, but no official confirmation. But during a chat with BBC, the actor declared the news. “I have Coolie No. 1. That is going to happen. This is a confirmation. As I said it, I was like, ‘Should I say it?’ But I think it has come out in so many places,” he said.

When asked if Alia Bhatt would feature in the film, he laughed and said, “I can’t do every film with Alia.” About the actress opposite him in the film, he said, “That you will know soon. I don’t want to say that. Alia and me are not working. We will give a break to people because for everyone it’s like, ‘Oh they are again back together.’”

This is not the first time that Varun is doing a remake of one of his father’s films. He starred in the remake of Judwaa, titled Judwaa 2 (2017), also directed by David.

Coolie No.1 is a comedy which also featured Karisma Kapoor, Kader Khan, Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Harish. The story was about a coolie who impersonates a wealthy industrialist in order to marry the girl he loves.
