Gully Boy enjoys good weekend with Rs39.25 crore

Director Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy finished the weekend with a healthy Rs71.25 crore in its balance sheet, as it enjoyed the benefits of a four-day extended weekend. The film added Rs39.25 crore to its box office collections on Saturday and Sunday, according to Boxofficeindia.com.

While the film already reaped benefits of releasing on Thursday (Valentine’s Day), its collections dipped to Rs12.75 crore on its second day. However, the weekend saw the word-of-mouth and good reviews push the audiences to the theatres.

The film managed to collect Rs18.50 crore on Saturday. The Sunday collections further improved at Rs20.75 crore.

Gully Boy review: Ranveer Singh explodes with a new sound in Zoya Akhtar’s tale of hope

However, the film’s major earnings have come from the metros. Mumbai alone has contributed Rs27 crore of the collection, with Delhi following close behind with Rs16 crore. According to Boxofficeindia.com, the film has also managed decent collections in NCR, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

Akhtar’s film follows the story of a rapper, Murad, who rises from the shanties of Mumbai’s Dharavi, to become an international star. The story has a urban base and youthful appeal. Despite the presence of Ranveer Singh, the film lacks the mass appeal of Singh’s earlier releases, Simmba (2019) or Padmaavat (2018).

That is one reason why the film has fallen short of Simmba’s opening weekend collection of Rs75.64 crore. But the film does score over Alia Bhatt’s Raazi (2018), which earned Rs32.72 crore.

Made at a budget of approximately Rs75 crore, the film is likely to hit its total mark in the next few days. With the music forging a connection with the youth, and the growing appeal of Singh, the coming week looks fortuitous for the film.
