George Springer is a professional baseball player currently with the Houston Astros of the MLB where he plays the position of an outfielder. As an outfielder, he has played both in right field as well as well as center field. Springer is also a skilled right-handed thrower and batter.

The professional baseballer was drafted by the Astros in the first round of the 2011 MLB right out of college, he began in the minor league before he was eventually promoted to the major league in 2014.

George Springer has so far in his career, won several awards and gained recommendations. In 2017 alone, he, for the first time, won the Silver Slugger Award, became an MLB All-Star and a World Series champion. He was also named the 2017 World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP), after recording a tying five home runs in a seven-game win against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

George Chelston Springer III was born on the 19th day of September 1989 in New Britain, Connecticut, to parents who are of Puerto Rican and Panamanian origin. His mother, Laura, is from Utuado, Puerto Rico and his father George II, is from Panama.

His grandfather, George I reportedly relocated to the U.S when he was only seventeen years of age and settled in Connecticut, where he studied at the Connecticut Teachers College.

Parents

Springer’s parents were also into sports at some point in their lives. His dad played college football for Connecticut football team – the UConn Huskies, he also played a little of baseball and participated in the 1976 Little League World Series. His mom was a top-level gymnast, during her younger days. Two of his sisters Nicole and Lena played softball in college.

Career

Coming from a family where both parents were former athletes, Springer began playing baseball early. As a freshman at the New Britain High School, George played in his varsity baseball team despite being 5 feet 2 inches and weighing 100 pounds at the time.

After his first year at New Britain High School, he transferred to Avon Old Farms School Avon, Connecticut, where he had to repeat his junior year due to low grades. George however, finished his High School education, at Avon Old Farms School. He played for the school baseball team.

In 2008, he was selected by The Minnesota Twins in the 48th round of the 2008 MLB draft but he turned down the offer as he felt he wasn’t yet ready to go professional. After High School, he got admission into the University of Connecticut, where he played college baseball for the Huskies baseball team. The following year, he was named  America Freshman All-America First Team and the Big East Conference rookie of the year.

In 2011, he emerged as a First Team All-American and Big East Conference Baseball Player of the Year, he was also named by both Perfect Game USA, Louisville Slugger and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as a first-team All-American.

George Springer was also named a Second Team All-American by Baseball America. His college career came to an end in 2011, when he was drafted by The Houston Astros in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft and he became the highest selection in the history of Connecticut baseball.

After his contract with the Astros which came with $2.52 million in bonuses, he began his rookie season with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League, where he played eight games before the next season began, George was named by MLB.com as the 84th best prospect in baseball to watch out for in the new season.

The following seasons before being promoted to the major league, he played for the Lancaster JetHawks of the Class A-Advanced California League, then the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Class AA Texas League, and finally for the Oklahoma City RedHawks of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League. Between this period, Springer hit his 22 home runs, recorded 28 stolen bases, joined the 30–30 club, appeared in the Texas League All-Star Game, and was named the most valuable player.

He was also named the Texas League Player of the Year at the end of the  2012 season, despite playing just 73 games for Corpus Christi, he also won USA Todays Minor League Player of the Year Award and was ranked by Baseball America as the18th-best prospect in baseball.

He began the 2014 season with Oklahoma City before his promotion to the MBL came. His MLB debut was on April 16, 2014, in a game against the Kansas City Royals. In 2017, he was named the World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) and became a recipient of the American League Silver Slugger Award.

In May 2018, Springer became the first player in the history of the Astros franchise to record six hits in a nine-inning game.

George Springer’s Wife, Girlfriend

George Springer married his girlfriend Charlise Castro on the 20th of January 2018. He had proposed in December 2016, while they were on vacation in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico.

According to Castro, they met while she played international softball (she actually played softball back at the University of Albany and for Puerto Rico’s national team). During her college career, she was named America East Conference Player of the Year and also became the second player to ever win the league’s Triple Crown in the history of the conference.

The former softball player who holds a degree in Communications from the University of Albany and a masters in Business Administration from the College of Saint Rose, Albany, New York, currently works as a personal trainer, she also runs her own fitness blog and website.

Springer who began playing baseball standing at 5 feet 2 inches and weighing 100 pounds, now stands 6 feet 3 inches, that is 1.92 m, weighing 215 pounds (98 kg).

He is a Stutter and he works for the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY) Foundation as a spokesman. The foundation which is based in Houston provides treatment for children with speech development difficulties with the aim of helping them build and restore their confidence.
