A film on the life of the convicted rapist and former spiritual leader Asaram Bapu will go on the floors soon. The film is produced by Sunil Bohra, who had made the controversial film The Accidental Prime Minister (2019) earlier this year.
The film on Asaram Bapu will be based on Ushinor Majumdar’s book titled God Of Sin: The Cult, Clout And Downfall Of Asaram Bapu. The Accidental Prime Minister was also based on a book of the same name by Sanjaya Baru.
Asaram Bapu was once considered one of the most revered spiritual gurus in India. However, he got embroiled in a controversy after he was accused of rape by a 16-year-old disciple in his asharam in Jodhpur in 2013. He was pronounced guilty in April 2018 and is currently serving life sentence.
Sharing the reason for making this film, Bohra said in an official statement, “I read the book and was taken in by the lawyer PC Solanki who fought the case for the victims against Asaram Bapu for free. The two lady police officers – one from Jodhpur and the other from Surat – are inspiring, too. In my eyes, they are the real heroes. We will focus on these people and the rest will be based on facts.”
He added the current status of the movie saying, “I bought the rights of the book last month. I have started meeting writers and shall lock the team soon. I want the movie to have an international appeal. The cast will be decided once the script is ready.”
