Dhanush flips from comedy to ‘mass’ style in this masala entertainer

Where Maari was a comic entertainer about a rowdy don turning good, the sequel to the film seems to enter the more serious action zone. The trailer for Balaji Mohan’s film captures Dhanush in a stylish, rowdy avatar in the second part of the story.

The trailer begins with Maari (Dhanush) leaving the city of Chennai for a town far deeper into the interiors of Tamil Nadu. While he is accompanied by his comic sidekicks, he seems to have accidentally turned a new leaf. But his past is still catching up with him. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar plays the collector looking for him. But there is a rival, Tovino Thomas’s Beeja aka Thanathos, who is also attempting to kill the gangster.

The trailer is packed with enough one-liners and sidekick comedy to make an interesting film. Sai Pallavi takes over from Kajal Aggarwal as Maari’s love interest, Aanandhi. Her portrayal as a rowdy auto driver seems an interesting twist.

Tovino Thomas’s turn as Thanathos, with his dreads and tattoos is another interesting factor. The name of the character also reminds us of the DC villain of the same name, though this one is a lot more real.

The trailer belongs to Dhanush, who looks in form. It even gives its star a ‘hero shot’ with the Bruce Lee-Enter The Dragon-style hall of mirrors scene. The actor has often admired the late Bruce Lee’s style of action, and looks to be imitating it.

The film is set to be released in theatres on 21 December 2018.
