I came out as ‘bisexual’ in 1997, this picture is from that winter in my first apartment off campus. Yes Christmas-time – I was at school instead of at home because my parents hadn’t taken kindly to my coming out. My coming out sucked, my unplanned public coming out sucked even more. The youth of today, even the millennials, have no idea just how scary it was a mere 20 years ago to take that step. But we live in a VERY different world now and it makes me so proud and happy to see all these wonderful stories about people’s coming out. Today’s posts are less about urging people to come out and more about celebrating the stories and experiences and celebrating that we don’t have to URGE people to come out because most feel so much more comfortable doing it on their own. As I have said all year, I believe that coming out of the HIV closet is the new ‘closet’ and the one I’m choosing to focus on today. We still have to URGE people to come out of that closet. I think we’re slowly making progress – as we eliminate stigma, introduce PrEP to more people, continue urging people to get tested and get across the importance of using treatment as prevention we will slowly make it easier. But, like with coming out as gay, we saw a huge influx in people willfully coming out when it it wasn’t scary anymore… BUT it only became less scary BECAUSE there were all these wonderful people around you coming out. Point being, today I urge my friends and fans who are HIV Positive to COME OUT. Even if its just telling your best friend… take some baby steps… Because I believe the best way to truly make coming out as HIV+ less scary is to ‘see all these wonderful people around you’ talking about being happy, healthy, and positive. Be one of those people.
