Could Always Be My Maybe Be the Next Big Netflix Movie?

Welcome back for a brand new episode of our flagship show, Collider Movie Talk! Today Perri Nemiroff is joined by Josh Macuga and Natasha Martinez to talk about some of the hottest movie news stories of the day.

The first story on today’s line-up is all about how Michelle Rodriguez is making a major difference in the Fast and Furious franchise. Back in June of 2017, she posted this on here Instagram feed: “F8 is out digitally today, I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise.” Now it’s looking like she actually just helped take a major steps towards making that happen! According to Bloomberg, she secured a female writer to join the Fast and Furious 9 team. While at the Bloomberg Future of Quality Summit she said, “I felt like there was not enough of a female voice in the franchise … You should evolve with the times, not just pander to certain demographics that are stuck” in the past.

In addition to that story, the Movie Talk panel also shares their thoughts on the trailer for the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy, Always Be My Maybe, directed by Nahnatchka Khan. The movie stars Ali Wong and Randall Park as childhood friends Sasha and Marcus. They have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years, but then Sasha returns to her hometown to open a new restaurant and runs into Marcus. Could this one wind up being a major romcom hit for Netflix, like Set It Up and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before? And if it is, with all the competition out there threatening Netflix’s streaming domination, should the platform try to corner the market in romantic comedies? Give the video at the top of this article a watch to find out what the panel thinks about that and also catch the debut of a Josh Macuga special, a segment he dubbed “Nemir-on/Nemir-off.”

Tune in for Collider Movie Talk every day, Monday through Friday, at 3pm PT live on the Collider Video YouTube channel!
