Chirag Patil to take on father Sandeep’s role in Kabir Khan’s ’83

Kabir Khan’s version of India’s 1983 cricket world cup triumph is set to include one person who is closer to the history of the event than others. Chirag Patil has been cast in the role of his own father, Sandeep Patil, in Kabir Khan’s film.

The actor, who has been a part of Marathi and Hindi films, including Qaidi Band (2017). 

The makers of the film released an image of Chirag alongside father Sandeep Patil to unveil his character on social media. 

Speaking to the daily tabloid Mumbai Mirror, Chirag said, “I don’t think any actor has played his own father before. I am the first.” 

However, in the Hollywood film Notorious (2009), Christopher Wallace Jr played the younger version of his own father, slain rapper and music producer The Notorious BIG. Chirag would be the first to do so in Hindi cinema.

Sandeep Patil was a crucial part of the Indian cricket team which managed to surpass expectations by winning the cricket world cup in 1983. It was Patil’s crucial 51 not out in the semi-final against England that ensured India’s progress to the final, and eventual victory. Surprisingly, Patil was playing with broken ribs throughout the tournament. 

Chirag is currently undergoing training with Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a former member of the victorious 1983 team himself, alongside Ranveer Singh and the other actors cast in the project.

Kabir Khan’s ’83 is set to release in theatres on 10 April 2020.
