CBFC expresses concerns, Cheat India makers change title to Why Cheat India

The makers of the Emraan Hashmi-starrer Cheat India were compelled to change the title of the film to Why Cheat India after the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) objected to the original title.

The producers of the film — Tanuj Garg, Atul Kasbekar, T-Series and Hashmi — said in an official joint statement: “The CBFC had concerns about the title Cheat India. We had an extensive conversation with the Examining Committee and Revising Committee regarding the proposed change as the film has been in public domain for a year, and more importantly, because the theatrical teaser, trailer and television promos had already been certified with the original title.”

The film is directed by Soumik Sen.

Despite their reservations, the producers had to change the title to Why Cheat India. “This would lead to dual communication a week before the release. The duress of lack of time left us with no choice but to mutually agree to the new title, Why Cheat India,” stated the statement.

This is not the first hurdle the makers faced. The CBFC had earlier ordered the makers to remove the tagline of the film which was ‘Nakal Mein Hi Akal Hai’. Last week, they had to advance the release of their film to 18 January, as they wanted to avoid a clash with Thackeray, which will be released on 25 January.
