Born as Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco in Mexico on July 18, 1990, Alvarez’s parents are of Spanish origins and he was raised in Juanacatlan in Jalisco. He started his boxing career at the age of 13 after watching his brother make his professional debut as a boxer. Alvarez participated in the junior Mexican National boxing championships in 2004, finishing at the second position. He also won the championship title in 2005 when he was just fifteen years old.

Canel Alvarez made his professional debut in 2005 after dropping out of high school to participate in the professional championships. The great boxer in his first 19 months as a professional boxer recorded 11 wins out of 13 fights with opponents who were far older than him. Later on, Alvarez recorded his third official bout win over Miguel Vazquez IBF lightweight champion in 2006 and also recorded the same victory in a rematch two years later.
Since the inception of his career, Alvarez has recorded more than 49 wins out of 52 professional contests both locally and internationally and has won four championship belts including the WBC Junior Welterweight Gongs and NABF championship. He has fought with bigger champions including Floyd Mayweather Jr., Austin Trout, Josesito Lopez, Shane Mosley, Gennady Golovkin, Amir Khan, and Kermit Cintron among others.

Canelo Alvarez’s parents are Ana Maria Barragan and Santos Alvarez. They have eight children, out of which seven are professional boxers including Canelo and a daughter Ana Alvarez. Since they were children, Canelo and his other siblings were actively involved in their family business. They sell popsicles and ice cream before they ventured into boxing.
In 2008, the six brothers namely, Rigoberto, Gonzalo, Daniel, Ramon, Ricardo, Victor, Daniel, and Canelo as their youngest were featured in a record-breaking contest in Zapopan, Jalisco where the seven of them featured in a boxing competition. However, some of his brothers won their opponents while others lost but the two that were outstanding were Canelo and Rigoberto who is twelve years older than Canelo.
Subsequently, in 2010, Rigoberto became the first in his family to win a title, he won the interim light middleweight belt and one year later Canelo surpassed his brother’s record after he won the light middleweight title in 2011.
Canelo and his family have been very supportive of each other and have been moving up the ladder together. Just like Canelo and Rigoberto, Ramon and Ricardo have also recorded successes in boxing. Ricardo has joined the line of business while Ramon has continued to try his luck in winning the world title. Their other siblings, Victor, Daniel, Gonzalo and their only sister Ana are also running various businesses. His father still runs their family business while his mother Ana takes good care of their home.
