So, y’all remember when Thanos did his snap and half of life just blinked out of existence? That’s exactly what Disney and Marvel did to box office records over the weekend when Avengers: Endgame dropped in theaters and promptly decimated the competition. There was a lot of theorizing and scrutinizing about whether Endgame would be able to top $300 Million domestically in its opening weekend — something experts weren’t even sure was mathematically possible — but Endgame beat even the boldest of predictions with $350 Million domestic and 1.2 Billion worldwide.
Endgame marks the eighth Marvel Studios film to cross $1 billion, and the second this year after Captain Marvel ($1,120.2). The other Marvel movies in the Billion Dollar Club are Infinity War ($2,048.4), The Avengers ($1,518.8), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1,405.4), Black Panther ($1,346.9), Iron Man 3 ($1,214.8), and Captain America: Civil War ($1,153.3).
The biggest records still on the table are for the film’s total gross, both domestic and worldwide, where it’s pitted against two juggernauts of the Box Office. In order to take those top spots, Endgame will have to top Avatar‘s $2.788 billion global cume and The Force Awakens‘ $937 domestic finish. There’s no denying Endgame had an unparalleled and unpredictable start, but in order to top those numbers, it’s going to have some serious legs at the box office, and indeed, it will have to outperform Infinity War‘s impressive endurance. That film ultimately netted $2.048 billion globally and $679 million domestically.
