Anthology web-series Delhi Crime goes to Netflix

The first season of web-series Delhi Crime, which is based by the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case, will have its world premiere in the Indie Episodic Section of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. There is further good news for its makers as the anthology series has been picked up by Netflix and will make its global launch on 22 March.

Written and directed by Richie Mehta, the seven-episode series stars Shefali Shah, Adil Hussain, Denzil Smith, Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang and Yashaswini Dayama. The streaming platform has already ordered a second season which will follow the same characters as they take on a new case, according to a report by Hollywood trade website, Deadline.com.

Shah plays a police officer who leads her team into the investigation of a brutal gang rape of a young woman in Delhi. The series follows their journey to capture the accused and the toll the task takes on the team.

The actress has travelled to Utah for the series premiere.

In a statement, Mehta said, “The making of Delhi Crime has been a personally transformative journey; speaking to every individual involved, retracing the paths that the police took during the course of the investigation, and hearing of the determination that it took for the case to be closed, despite severe limitations. I hope that we’ve been able to provide context, catharsis and open once again a difficult conversation that must be had about the forces that enabled this brutality.”

Indo-Canadian filmmaker Mehta has previously worked on the films Amal (2007) and Siddharth (2013) and the documentary India In A Day (2016).

Delhi Crime, shot on location in the capital city, is produced by Golden Karavan and Ivanhoe Pictures.
