Eastern India’s largest production house, SVF Private Ltd. will organise the second special screening of R Balki’s Pad Man in Krishnanagar on 28 February. The first screening of the Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte-starrer took place at Purulia on 22 February.
The initiative has been taken by SVF, which also happens to be the distributor of the film in the eastern regions, to create awareness about menstrual hygiene among girls in the rural areas of Bengal. More than 250 girls under the government’s Kanyashree scheme watched the film in the theatre of the district headquarters of Purulia.
Pad Man review: Over-explanation stops extraordinary tale from becoming brilliant film
The use of filthy rags and newspapers instead of expensive disposable sanitary napkins by village women during their menstrual cycle prompted social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham to invent the low-cost sanitary napkins for them. Balki’s Pad Man, based on Muruganantham’s story, aims at breaking the taboo around menstruation and aims to educate about hygienic practices during menstruation.
“We always want to do our bit for the society we live in. This special screening of Pad Man, which has a very strong social message, is our way of saluting the Kanyashree girls in Bengal and we are thankful to Purulia district administration for giving us this opportunity,” said Mahendra Soni, co-founder and director, SVF told a local news website.
