Ajay, Rakul, Tabu in a love triangle in this cheery Punjabi number

The whole family gathers to drink wine and be merry in the backdrop of De De Pyaar De’s latest song, ‘Mukhda Vekh Ke’. Meanwhile, the characters of Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh and Tabu are in the midst of their own romantic troubles.

British composer Manj Musik, formerly of the bhangra group RDB, updates the 1999 Punjabi track ‘Mukhda Dekh Ke’ by the late singer Surjit Bindrakhia and brings it into the new millennium. The electronic beats of this Punjabi hit song are more suited to the dance floor than the 1999 version. It follows the now ubiquitous trend of recreating older songs in Hindi films.

Kumaar’s lyrics tailor the song to the film’s situation where Devgn’s character is torn between his former wife (Tabu) and his girlfriend (Rakul Preet). ‘Mukhda Vekh Ke’ is sung by Mika Singh and Dhvani Bhanushali whose voices suit the song but don’t quite match the cast.

Mika Singh’s voice does not seem appropriate for the sleepy-eyed Devgn, who only moves his upper body while dancing, and Bhanusali’s vocals don’t exactly match Tabu. But on the upside, the song is cheery and inviting, wanting one to break into a dance and exactly what you would want to put on repeat.

De De Pyaar De, directed by Akiv Ali, is due to be released on 17 May. Watch the song below:
