After Badhaai Ho success, Amit Sharma begins work on Syed Rahim biopic

Director Amit Ravindernath Sharma has begun working on his next project, a biopic on the former India football coach Syed Abdul Rahim.

The film is likely to feature Ajay Devgn in the lead role, with Sharma currently busy with his research for the project.

The director shared pictures of himself with former India players Fortunato Franco and Tulsidas Balaram.

Sharma’s last directorial, Badhaai Ho (2018), featuring Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra, Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta, has crossed the Rs100 crore mark in box-office collections and is still going strong.

The biopic on former India coach Syed Abdul Rahim was in the works even before Badhaai Ho was released. Rahim is considered one of Indian football’s pioneering coaches, and led the team to gold in the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 in Delhi as well as in his final tournament at the Jakarta Asian Games in 1962.

The film was announced in July earlier this year, with Ajay Devgn cast as Rahim.

Speaking with the Bombay Times supplement of The Times of India newspaper, producer Boney Kapoor had said, “I was amazed that not many are aware of someone as significant as Syed Abdul Rahim. He is an unsung hero whose achievements must be saluted. It takes someone like Ajay Devgn to play Syed Abdul Rahim.”

Devgn is also working on Luv Ranjan’s untitled next, as well as Neeraj Pandey’s Chanakya, both of which are scheduled to be released in 2019.
