Uri: The Surgical Strike review – Vicky Kaushal hits bullseye in maiden action flick

“In times where small films don’t last a week, Uri is still going houseful in the third weekend. This is a very big achievement. The film also gained because of 26 January [Republic Day holiday]. No one would have expected it to make Rs150 crore. This is a great achievement,” said trade analyst Amod Mehra.

Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, too, was all praise for the way Uri has performed. “It has already done way beyond what was expected of it and it is just not stopping. With the way it is going, I won’t be surprised if Uri comes close to the Rs200-crore nett mark. Kudos to the makers [producer Ronnie Screwvala], the people who decided to back this film,” said Rathi.

Made at an estimated budget of Rs28 crore, Uri was initially released in 2,200 screens in India. Uri had made Rs35 crore nett in its opening weekend, and this collection hasn’t dropped much in the third weekend.

“The second-week collection was nearly 75-80% of the first week. It is absolutely terrific. I believe the film has got a great recall value too. I have seen the film twice,” added Rathi.

Uri: The Surgical Strike had made Rs71.24 crore nett in its first week, while the second-week collections were Rs62.25 crore nett. Uri has collected Rs14 crore for combined satellite and digital rights, and a further Rs2 crore for the music rights [all sold to Zee].

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Uri is based on the Indian Army’s 2016 surgical strike in retaliation against the terror attack in the Uri district of Jammu and Kashmir, that saw 19 Indian soldiers martyred.

The film is a commercial success and Kaushal has been lauded by one and all. The rising star had the privilege of celebrating Republic Day with the Indian soldiers and fans at the Atari Wagah Border in Punjab.

“Absolutely thrilled and honoured to celebrate #70thRepublicDay with our First Line of Defence- the BSF Jawaans and a crowd of 28,000 Indians at the Atari Wagah Border. “HOW’s THE JOSH?!,” tweeted Kaushal.

The actor will be seen next in Takht, produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. He is also being linked to Ronnie Screwvala’s Saare Jahaan Se Achcha after Shah Rukh Khan opted out of the Rakesh Sharma biopic.

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh’s Simmba is nearing the end of its box office run after the film collected Rs67 lakh nett in its fifth weekend. Simmba, which was released on 28 December 2018, has so far made Rs238.83 crore nett in India.
