In the past few years, veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh has been seen in films like Raazi (2018), Tum Bin 2 (2016), Happy Bhag Jayegi (2016) and others. In between, he also acted in a Pakistani film titled Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2. The comedy film broke the box office records across the border.
On the sidelines of the ongoing LIFFT India Filmotsav, held in Lonavala, Singh briefly spoke about his experience working on the film and hoped it is released in India too.
Singh had a good time shooting the Pakistani film. “It was a very good experience. We shot it in Dubai. The film was a superhit. It’s the biggest hit in Pakistan,” he said.
Directed by Nadeem Baig, the film is a comedy starring Humayun Saeed and Fahad Mustafa. Singh plays the character of Nawab, who is the father of Kubra Khan, one of the female leads. The film, a sequel to Jawani Phir Nahin Ani (2015), released in Pakistan on 22 August this year.
As per various reports, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 broke box office records being the first Pakistani film that earned Rs50 crore in just 18 days.
The veteran actor is all praise for the level of writing in Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2. “Their writing was outstanding. The dialogues were so beautiful as well as intelligent and mature. I played the character of an Indian ambassador to Dubai. His lingo is such that it suits the character,” he said.
Singh believes that sometimes this is not seen in Indian films. “Sometimes over here, if we have 10 characters, all of them would speak in the same way. We need to understand that there has to be a difference in the language spoken by a halwai, ambassador, someone from the IT, army officer, etc,” he added.
He revealed that before Jawani Phir Nahin Aani 2, he had worked in a Pakistani serial. “I had just done one serial over there. But I didn’t have much contacts. However, because of the technical advancement and WhatsApp, I am able to keep in touch with them through groups. So, there are good points of this technology and also bad points. I think bad points are more,” Singh said, with a smirk.
When asked if there is a chance for his and other Pakistani films to be released in India, Singh said, “I don’t know. It can if the situation between both countries improve. The path to Kartarpur has been opened now. So, hopefully the path of film distribution will also open some day,” he said.
