Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War, which won the Best Director gong at the Cannes film festival last year, could not do an encore at the 91st Academy Awards in Los Angeles last night.
The film represented boutique Indian studio Cinestaan Film Company (CFC) at the Oscars with nominations for Best Film in Foreign Language, Best Direction, and Best Cinematography.
Cold War is among several major international collaborations led by the company. CFC also had a 50-50 co-production with Film London for The Hungry (2017), which was premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
CFC is also co-producing Jim Farrell’s feature documentary, The Torch, with IFC. The documentary is vying for a release soon.
Cinestaan Film Company chairman Rohit Khattar said, “We are delighted that our mission to build a boutique studio championing stories that resonate with a global audience is paying off. Our international sales division and international distribution JV have had a rewarding two years since inception. We have an eclectic mix of international and domestic films in the pipeline.”
The company’s sales arm, C International Sales, also represents several critically acclaimed films from India in international markets. It was the exclusive sales agency for Mukti Bhavan (2017), directorial debut of Shubhashish Bhutiani, which was released in over 30 countries and has just completed 100 days in Japan.
Another co-production in the works is Asha And The Street Dogs by Belgian filmmaker Frederick Du Chau, with Newscope Films, UK. This will be followed by the release of award-winning filmmaker Gitanjali Rao’s animated feature, Bombay Rose.
Cinestaan Film Company is a sister concern of Cinestaan Digital Private Limited, the company which runs this website.
